Once the Muhurtham is fixed and the hall is booked, the next question is who to tell, and how. A save the date gives family and friends the date and the city long before the pathirikai is ready. For a Tamil wedding with guests flying in, it matters more than it might for others.
When to send it
- Six to nine months before, if many guests are travelling from abroad.
- Four to six months before, if most guests are local.
- As soon as the Muhurtham is confirmed, if it falls in a busy wedding month or a holiday period.
Send the full invitation about two to three months before the wedding, with the RSVP deadline about six weeks before, so you have numbers in time for the hall and caterer.
What to include
- Your names.
- The date, and the city or town. The venue can follow with the invitation.
- “Invitation to follow”, so nobody thinks this is the invitation.
- A link to your wedding website for travel details, if you have one.
Leave out the Muhurtham window and the event schedule for now. Times can still move, and correcting them later is harder than adding them.

Invitation to follow
A single Tamil word above your names, such as திருமணம் (Thirumanam), makes the card feel like yours without needing a translation.
Sharing it on WhatsApp
The family WhatsApp group is where most Tamil wedding news travels, and a save the date sent there reaches everyone in a minute. A few things help it land well:
- Tell parents, grandparents and close elders yourself first, by phone or in person. Hearing it from a group message can sting.
- Check the link preview before you post it. It should show your names and design, not a blank box.
- Send it from your own phone, or ask each parent to send it to their side. It should come from someone guests know.
- For relatives who are not on WhatsApp, send the same link by text or email.
Who gets one
Send save the dates only to people you will definitely invite. Taking someone off the list after they have saved the date is far more awkward than adding them later. If the guest list is still being negotiated between the two families, settle the core list first: close family, the people who will travel, and anyone who needs to book leave.
For a household, one save the date is enough. Address it to the family, for example “Dear Kandiah family”, and the whole household will know it includes them.
Digital or printed?
Many couples send save the dates digitally and keep a printed pathirikai for elders and for the traditional visit to invite family in person. Digital cards cost nothing per guest, arrive instantly in every time zone and can link to your website. It is common to do both.
Whichever you choose, keep the design consistent. When the save the date, the invitation and the website look alike, guests recognise each one at a glance in a busy chat.
